Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.”Īs Christians we firmly believe that God remains present with us, amidst the darkness, the source of eternal life giving light. The Lord Jesus Christ declared, “ I am the light of the world. In short, it is an ideal book to read as we seek to negotiate the darkness we are passing through. Through it all he clings to what he knows to be true about God, despite the discouragement of his wife and his friends, whose accusations and quick answers add to his pain rather than relieve it. Job wrestles long and hard with his own suffering, and with the wider question of why the righteous suffer. It focuses on the Biblical book of Job, which explores Job’s profound suffering as he seeks to make sense, within his relationship with God, of the darkness that has overwhelmed his life. And there are times in our lives when chaos, emptiness, and darkness threaten to overwhelm us. There are times in the Biblical story when the God-given order, fullness, and light of the world is under threat from Satan, the one who opposes God and who seeks to destroy life. In the verses that follow in this chapter of Genesis, God takes the formless and empty earth and shapes and fills it with life, bringing forth a creation that is overflowing with life and which is wonderfully good. God saw that the light was good, and he separated the light from the darkness.” And God said, ‘Let there be light,’ and there was light. Now the earth was formless and empty, darkness was over the surface of the deep.”īut here, at the very beginning, the darkness is transformed by the presence of God and his Word, which brings light and life: “The Spirit of God was hovering over the waters. “In the beginning God created the heavens and earth.
